Speed is a scalar quantity that is defined as the change in position of
an object with respect to time. It is the magnitude of a velocity
vector. Mathematically, it is described by the following equation:

where the variable d represents distance and the variable t represents time. Although speed and velocity are the same numerically (i.e. in magnitude), the equation is often seen with either the variable s (speed) or v (velocity). |
